Heritage Governance
Unlike public schools, private schools, particularly private Christian schools, are structured as either independent schools or church-sponsored schools. According to national statistics, 97% of private Christian schools are affiliated with a church. To avoid challenges associated with the church-sponsored model, Heritage was founded in 1998 as an independent school, allowing it to chart its own course free of denominational challenges and financial dependence upon a specific church.
Heritage is governed by a Board of Trustees responsible for upholding the school’s mission. As stated in the by-laws, the board is independent, self-governing, and self-perpetuating. This organizational structure allows the board to keep the school “on mission,” preventing it from drifting toward post-modernism and away from the school’s original vision.
The Board structure is similar to most non-profit organizations, in that there are two boards: the Board of Trustees and the Board of Advisors.
The Board of Trustees exists solely to ensure that the school’s mission remains intact, clear, and communicated throughout multiple constituencies, that the mission is being professionally executed with positive results, and that talent and financial resources are in place to ensure the immediate and future health of the school. As a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, the Board has the ultimate fiduciary responsibility for all that is Heritage. Pragmatically, the board is organized around functional expertise.
The Board of Advisors is in place to offer broader assistance and guidance from their professional and experiential platforms.
