My story is one of incredible blessing. Though I did not become a Christian until I was 31, when I look back, I can see God’s hand in my life.
I grew up the oldest of four children in a family that moved every two to four years. Until our move to Connecticut when I was in sixth grade, we “did” church. Leaving the details for another time, today most of my family, including my daughter, mom, step dad, sister and brother and their families, are Christians. It has been an amazing journey.
To be honest, teaching was never something I thought of doing. After earning a journalism degree from the University of Georgia, I spent 12 years in the public relations field. It was a great learning experience. My largest client was IBM’s educational division which gave me the opportunity to learn about all aspects of education. Visiting schools throughout the country gave me a greater appreciation for those who have the responsibility of educating children. I still was not interested in teaching; my focus was on my goals of making a lot of money and earning a big title.
All of that changed when I had my beautiful daughter, my greatest joy. I was fortunate enough to be able to start my own consulting/freelance writing business so I could stay home with her. I became a Christian and began teaching Sunday school, vacation Bible school, and women’s Bible studies. I also had the opportunity to write the curriculum for the children’s program at a local MOPS chapter and be a children’s leader at a local Bible Study Fellowship.
When my daughter was in three-year-old preschool, I went to a mom’s coffee. I sat next to a woman who told me about a classical Christian school modeled after a school in Texas. It sounded too good to be true. Unbelievably, a year later I was the second-grade teacher at that school, a sister school of Heritage Preparatory School. Within two months it was very clear that teaching…education…was my passion. Since that time I have done some Master's work in Gifted Education at the University of Connecticut. Today I am blessed to be a part of the Heritage family and look forward to another wonderful year.
In my spare time I have tried many different things, but my favorites are reading, traveling, antiquing, attending musicals and concerts, leading women’s Bible studies, and spending time with family and friends.
