Art (Enrichment-Class 8)

God said, "Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground." So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them." Genesis 1:26-27 (NIV)

We are wired to create because we are made in the image of a creative God. He is an amazing artist and the Creator of the universe. It is my delight to share this with our students and encourage them to explore the rich history of art and its many techniques.

I grew up in central Florida as the artistic middle child in a family with three siblings and parents who have now been married for 37 years. Working with my hands and creating has always enlivened me and allowed me to express myself in a way that words cannot. From elementary school to post-college life, I have taken art classes and enjoyed learning art history and technique. Painting, drawing, and photography are among my favorite art forms. I spent the past 6 years working for my church in central Florida and in December of 2006 I began searching for a more creative way to spend my life.

A friend from Atlanta told me about Heritage. She said, “If you could work at any school, you would want to work at Heritage.” She told me about the close knit relationships between teachers and parents and the great sense of community that could be found at Heritage. I was immediately interested and began daydreaming about teaching art. I was hired to teach art in late February of 2007 and began teaching two months later in April of 2007.

My desire is that my labor here at Heritage would benefit my students and give them eyes to see the beauty around them.  I hope that each student will learn to see Jesus in every face and in every living thing that they experience. It is a great privilege and honor to be called to such work. Work that daily encounters beauty and God’s creativity. Throughout the school year I would appreciate your prayers for the working out of this desire. Pray for the insight, words, action, and grace needed to train and lead students in a love of art.
