Laying the Foundation: The Lower School at Heritage

At Heritage, we view the lower school years (Grades 1 through 5) as a time of intentional growth where the joyful wonder of early learning deepens into focused study and growing maturity.

1st–5th Grade: The Grammar Stage
In the lower school years, Heritage students enter the grammar stage of classical learning—a season marked by a natural eagerness to absorb knowledge. Children at this age are uniquely wired to memorize, mimic, and internalize the world around them. We harness this God-given capacity by laying strong foundations in language and math. Students learn the core grammar of each subject—such as key dates and events in history, rules of language, and foundational math facts—through repetition, hands-on experiences, and joyful reinforcement. This stage is not only about acquiring facts, but about forming the building blocks for a lifetime of wisdom and understanding.

Grades 1 through 5 – Designed to provide a basis for a lifetime of learningAt Heritage, students are immersed in the great works of Western Civilization—masterpieces that have shaped the fields of art, history, language, philosophy, and literature. Through the careful study of the past, they gain wisdom to understand the present. A classical education invites students into a rich tradition of learning, grounded in timeless ideas, primary sources, enduring truths, and noble practices. By placing before them the finest works of literature, art, and music, we cultivate their affections toward what is true, good, and excellent—laying the foundation for lives of purpose, virtue, and faith.

Embracing the True, Good, and Beautiful

Morning Liturgy

From Monday to Thursday, students engage in liturgy, Bible readings, and prayer. These activities are supplemented with regular Bible class in first grade through high school, fostering an understanding of Scripture. On Fridays, the school community gathers for chapel, with grades 1-5 and upper school students having separate services, and a monthly all-school chapel.

Chapel Gatherings

The Friday chapel service involves Scripture reading and hymns, with messages delivered by faculty, students, or staff members. The aim is to provide a time for worship and to prepare students to be active participants in their churches. Parents, family, and guests are welcome to join these services.

Play Break

Recognizing the importance of play in young children's education, all lower school students get a half-hour break mid-morning for outdoor play, supporting their physical and social development. This break is also extended to sixth-grade and middle school students for fostering fellowship with classmates and teachers.
