“Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.”
— Proverbs 22:6

As parents, we are blessed with the incredible opportunity to witness firsthand the unfolding of God’s plan in the lives of our children. We don’t merely observe from the sidelines; we are actively chosen by God to guide our children toward Him, shepherding their hearts and minds as they grow. It is a task of profound significance—and one that can often feel daunting. Yet, the Lord graciously doesn’t leave us to do this alone. He has surrounded us with a community of fellow believers to share in this sacred responsibility.

Fourteen years ago, when our oldest child was a bright-eyed four-year-old ready to embark on his school journey, we set out to find a school that could partner with us in raising our child to become all he was created to be. We were searching for a place that would not only provide a top-tier education but also nurture their spiritual growth, pointing them toward a life of service to God. We weren’t sure if such a school existed—but we were determined to find out.

Fast forward 14 years later, as we are months away from witnessing our oldest child graduate as part of the inaugural senior class, and I can confidently say: that place does exist.

At Heritage Preparatory School, we found a school that lives out its mission to: Think with Excellence. Believe with Confidence. Live with Character.

It has been a tremendous privilege to partner with this school—engaging alongside teachers, administrators, and families in a shared mission to raise our children in the way they should go.

Heritage doesn’t just serve as a school for our children—it’s a Christ-centered community that surrounds our family, supporting us, praying with us, and caring for our children and family.

How Do We Partner in Our Children’s Education and Faith Formation?

The partnership between parents and schools is essential for a child’s success. At Heritage, this partnership is rooted in parental involvement—actively engaging with our children’s education, collaborating with teachers, and building a strong, supportive community. But what does that partnership actually look like in practice? Here are a few ways we can all be intentional in our involvement:

1. At Home

Parental involvement begins in the home. Here’s how we can make a lasting impact:

  • Make Family Devotions a Priority: Spend time together in God’s Word, and reinforce what your child learns at school. This partnership between home and school plants seeds of truth that will flourish in their hearts over time.
  • Engage in Meaningful Conversations: Ask about their day—both the highs and the lows. Play the “high and low” game to help them reflect on their experiences. Listen actively and ask thoughtful questions.
  • Establish a Healthy Routine: Every child is different. Does your child need some outdoor time before homework? A quiet, distraction-free spot to study? Understand your child’s needs and create a routine that best supports them.
  • Be There for Support: Whether it’s helping with a project, studying for a quiz, or reading through a paper together, always be available to support and be present to your child.

2. Within the Heritage Community

At Heritage, we’re not just parents—we’re part of a larger community united in purpose. The Apostle Paul reminds us in 1 Corinthians 12:14 that the body of Christ is made up of many parts, each contributing something valuable. Here’s how you can contribute to the broader school community:

  • Share Your Gifts and Talents: Whether you love books, history, or hospitality, there are countless ways to serve at Heritage. Volunteer at the book fair, help with history day, or contribute to the Hospitality committee. Your involvement enriches the entire school experience.
  • Attend Parent Workshops: Our teachers and leaders offer wisdom and insights on various topics. These workshops are a great opportunity to grow as parents while learning valuable strategies for supporting your child’s education.
  • Build Connections with Other Families: Community is built one relationship at a time. Host playdates, attend grade-level gatherings, and join prayer groups. These are the people you are linking arms with as you share life and support each other in your parenting journeys.

3. With Heritage Faculty and Staff

Strong communication between parents and teachers is crucial to a child’s success. Here are some ways to engage with the faculty and staff at Heritage:

  • Communicate Openly with Teachers: Whether celebrating a success or addressing a challenge, maintain an open line of communication with your child’s teachers. They genuinely care about your child’s academic progress and character development, and they want to partner with you in raising your child.
  • Check on Progress: Stay involved by regularly checking in with teachers about your child’s performance. Share any concerns or insights you may have, and be open to feedback.
  • Get Involved in School Activities: Volunteer for field trips or events, and take time to get to know your child’s classmates and teachers. The more involved you are, the more connected your child will feel to the school community.

Pray for the School: Commit to praying for the staff, teachers, and leadership at Heritage, as well as for the broader community. Prayer is one of the most powerful ways we can support the school.

A Blessing for Our Family

Choosing Heritage Preparatory School as our partner in raising our children has been one of the greatest blessings of our lives. If you are part of the Heritage community, I encourage you to take full advantage of the opportunities to engage, serve, and build relationships. You’ll soon discover the treasure that this school and its community are to your family.
